Back to Beethoven!

Knowing my Professor at the Univ. of South Carolina studied with the concert artist Abbey Simon, I decided to do a little research and see who he studied with and this is what I came up with!  It looks like you students and I can trace our musical lineage back to both  Beethoven, Haydn And Anton Rubenstein!

 

LINEAGE BACK TO BEETHOVEN & HAYDN
Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827 studied with Haydn

German born pianist and composer spent much of his life in Vienna, compositional style influenced by Mozart and teacher Haydn, style straddled the Classical and Romantic eras.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven  

Carl Czerny 1791-1857 studied with Beethoven
Born in Austria of Czech parents, studied w/Beethoven age 10-13, became his assistant, noticed deafness, memorized all of Beethoven's piano music.  Known today for his Velocity studies/etudes.  Very interesting article section "Relationsip with Beeth." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Czerny  

Theodor Leschetizky
1860-1941 studied with Czerny
Polish born pianist, a founder of St. Petersburg Conservatory along with A. Rubenstein, taught in Vienna, contemporary of Liszt

Ignacy Jan Paderewski 1860-1941 studied with Leschetizsky
Polish pianist moved to Calif prior to WWI, raised Zinfandel grapes on his 2000 acre ranch which were made into wine by famous the York Mtn. Winery. Harold Bauer 1873-1951 studied with Paderewski
English born pianist, long time Professor at Manhatten School of Music.  Studied with Paderewski in Paris for a year.

Abbey Simon 1922  studied with Bauer

Charles Fugo
 studied with Abbey Simon

Anton Rubenstein 1829-1894

Legendary Russian pianist, composer, conductor, one of the founders of St. Petersburg Conservatory along with Leschetizky (see above), his brother founded the Moscow Conservatory, composition teacher of Tschaikowsky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Rubinstein  

Josef Hoffman 1876-1957--studied with Rubenstein
Polish pianist highly regarded for his technique & musicianship, child prodigy compared to Mozart, lived much of his life in the US, taught at Curtis.  Concert artist Marta Argerich also studied with Hoffman. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Hofmann
